The project Meiji-Portraits refers in the broadest sense with the Meiji Era, a period in Japanese history covering the regency of Emperor Mutsuhito, also called Emperor Meiji, from 1868-1912. After a seclusion policy leading to over two-hundred years of a certain closure Japan developed with the Meiji-Restoration from a backward feudal state to a modern imperial World Power.
During the Meiji - restoration at first the power of the Japanese Emperor was re-settled by the support of the Daimyos of the Provinces of Satsuma, Tosa, Hizen and Chōshū and the last Tokugawa - Shogun had been finally deprived of power due to the lost Boshin war. After strengthening his power Mutsuhito began with far-reaching reforms. The xenophobic course pursued so far was replaced by the slogan to establish "a rich country and a strong army”. Thus the way of Japan to a military great power was already settled in the initial phase of the Meiji era. All feudal elements of the administration were abolished; the country was divided into prefectures. The Emperor shifted his seat from Kyōto to Edo, which was renamed to Tokyo in July 1868.
